Housing during nursing school?

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I'm planning on applying and atteding a nursing school in Houston (one in the medical center), but currently my family lives way out in Cypress. So when it comes down to housing I'll either have to get a car and worry about gas and maintenence and commuting or I could rent an appartment closer to the medical center.

All things considered, which would prove better with being in nursing school? (I have to put into account the atmosphere that would come from being at home and having my own appartment).

WOW, that is a tough decision...for me I think I would want to live close to school, and go visit the family on weekends and holiday. That's just my opinion.

I think it depends how much money you would like to spend. Apartment living is much more expensive than just paying for gas, and the Med Center area is pricey. However, if you can get a roommate, that would certainly help with the costs and would be nice and convenient to your school. Lots of students that live in the area take the bus, metrorail or live in an apartment that has a shuttle bus to them to the medical center.

However, we have *a lot* of commuters at our nursing school, and they seem to take it in stride. But then again, a lot of them have families and own homes so moving isn't really an option. Actually, a lot of our clinicals are not in the medical center, so some people who live on the outskirts may have clinical right down the street while others (like me) have to commute way out to clinical. Lol. But it's only one to three days/week or so.

All in all is works either way. Good luck with your decision!

I lived 95 miles one-way from my nursing school, which adds up to 190 miles round-trip per day. For one year I commuted, driving back and forth for 5 days in a row. In one year I put 53,000 miles on my car, but it was well worth it. :)

I drove into Houston for a semester of nursing school and it was NOT fun. The second semester, I just got loans and moved into Archstone Medical Center apts- the MetroRail stops RIGHT in front of them so no need to drive except to clinicals and the grocery store! It'll be really hard without a car though since Houston is so spread out and clinicals aren't always in the med center...

Thanks everyone for all of the replys so far!

I do agree that an apartment would be more expensive and I might wind up having to get a car anyway. But that looks more appetising than having to live at home.

Keep the opinions coming!

Whoa! Now I see why you are "The Commuter"! If I was in that position I think I would definitely get an apartment.

I think it would be helpful to see where exactly my clinicals will be so that I can plan a little better. From what some of you are saying they might not be all in the same place.
