i am an experienced rn looking for a way to make a few extra bucks. i am considering home health. i was told to do prn or contract to max my hourly wage. i have never done home health before, is it true that i could work while my kids are at school? are you required to see a certain amount of patients a day? is there someone out there that can give me the ins and outs? i work for sps here in austin- the agency for seton. i like controlling my schedule and i am used to getting about $300 for an 8 hour shift. any thoughts?

For work here or there, it is better to do extended care shifts rather than intermittent visits. For visit work they prefer to have someone on a more regular basis, even full time. In shift work, you have flexibility with your schedule that does not involve trying to mesh your work needs with the needs to see X clients X times per week. That is best left to the regular employees. You can work just about any schedule that is acceptable to yourself and the client. Many moms fix their hours to insure they are home for the kids in the afternoon. I knew a nurse who worked 7 hour shifts to do this and the client accepted it (the client was so happy to have a nurse at all after so many years without a nurse during the week). Another nurse worked five hour shifts to get to her other job (her primary job). That was ok with the client and the agency (the agency could not find someone to fill the entire shift, or they would have done so). At any rate, it seems that this setup with an hourly rate would be your best bet. Check out the home health forum for tons of input. Hope you like hh.
