Hi,

So I've recently transitioned from hospital based case management to insurance home based care manager.   My current area to cover are NICU members. My primary area prior to this was med surg so infancy care is new to me.  My question is for how do you broach the topic of fetal demise with a parent when talking to them over the phone?  What do you say during the conversation? Thank you

Though I have not worked on the CM side of newborn loss, I have worked in maternal/child health for a number of years. It is best to first, acknowledge their loss. Keep in mind that everyone will deal with loss differently. Some may want to avoid the topic completely, while others will want to talk about things in detail. Offer your condolences, ask them what they need from you, and simply just listen. If you’re unsure of how to bring up the topic, simply ask “ How are you doing?”  This May Help them to open up As to how they’re doing/dealing with everything. I hope this helps
