TEAS Score results TERRIBLE.

Published

I recently took the TEAS V and received my score today. I'm totally bummed. I scored a 71.3%, proficient. I scored very high in science 90th percentile, and very high in reading, but did not do so well in math. My college currently only accepts the first score. The minimum required score for my school is a 62%, and my cumulative GPA is a 3.05. I've completed all my prerequisites and the GPA in those is 2.7. Found out today that the one school I was working so hard for wants a cumulative of 3.0 in the science courses. Also, one of my friends informed me that there is no hope for me. Apparently, my score is much too low, and no one will even consider me (This particular friend failed the first time she took the TEAS and is currently taking remediation courses. I don't know if this was said out of jealousy, or out of genuine concern). While preparing for the TEAS, I was also preparing for the CNA state test. Both tests were within 4 days of each other. I am happy that I was able to pass both. I thought a 71.3% wasn't so bad given my circumstances, but now I am not so sure. My question is, should I totally give up? I've worked so hard for all of this, but now I feel like it won't happen for me. Any advice or input that anyone can give would be so greatly appreciated. I really want to do this, and I know that it is something that I can be great at!

Have you looked into WGU? My test score was 73.3% and was accepted into their program. I found the exam hard and I did study for it. The national average is around 63-64%. Don't give up.

Yes. You should check them out.

You should apply everywhere you can, not just at a single college or university. Western Governor's University is a private school that apparently offers a BSN program. Their pass rate is fairly decent, but not stellar. It's likely going to be expensive...

Do be careful about repeating coursework as some schools will not look very favorably on that and may deduct admission points if you exceed some number of course repeats. My school accepted only the first TEAS result that was >62% (passing) within a rolling 5 year window. Some schools will accept the highest of the first 3 attempts within a certain amount of time. I was lucky in that I scored very well at 88.7% and had about a 3.5 prerequisite GPA, though my overall GPA wasn't more than about a 3.0 and that was including a couple of courses that I repeated.

I will also say that if you never apply to a program, the answer will always be "no" because you never applied. If you meet the minimum qualifications to apply to a program, apply to it. They may very well consider your application "qualified" and they may give greater weight to reapplicants, even if they don't formally do it.

The reason why I posted my own scores isn't to show that I've got decent scores, it's that even with decent scores, I wasn't admitted to a nursing school right away... it took me 4 years to get in and some of my classmates only had to apply once, or maybe even three times and they had lower scores than I did. They all, however, met minimum standards for admission and they kept reapplying until they were admitted to the school too.
