We literally do take care of "Santa" here in central AK, from time to time. He lives in North Pole and most people around here just call him "Nick", or so I understand. I don't think there will be a public announcement if he chooses hospice, I wonder if he has health insurance.

I've heard that Nick has been kind of non-compliant with efforts to lose weight to help his diabetes, blood pressure, and arthritic knees, but, what a sweet guy!!
A really sweet guy...
We should leave him kale chips rather than cookies.
Thanks Santa! You have been really generous over the years!

"Nobody likes a skinny Santa", says Mrs Claus in the cartoon, 'Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer'.
Printed in a column from my local newspaper.

My most memorable time for a Santa visit was the night before Christmas in a very samll rural hospital. I was working ICU and had one patient, a young boy. His mother was one of my friends, and a great nurse. A Wilm's tumor had just been discovered and he had had the nephrectomy done that day. We heard caroling from down the hall and soon Santa popped his head in to see the groggy little boy. He said hi. The boy looked at him but really did not care for a Santa visit. Santa understood and left his phone number where he would be staying locally if the boy wanted any presents delivered personally.
He left with narry a twinkle in his eye, but a tear. It was a small town and he also knew the family. It always touched me that after all the beard tugs, lap dancers and sticky hands Santa handled those weeks before Christmas he still could hope for a bit of magic for this young boy. And he could offer to give up his Christmas day, after the trip around the world all night, for the possibility of a smile on that young face.
