Taking Anatomy & Physiology 1 for the first time this fall! Any suggestions???!!!!!

Published

Looking forward to taking anatomy & physiology! Can anyone provide me with any helpful tips as to succeeding in this course? Thanks so much!

Look for videos from khan academy and interactive biology on YouTube. Those really helped me when I needed extra clarification.

Look for labeling exercises for bones/bone markings and muscles. You can even just cover up the labels in your book and quiz yourself over and over again. Mnemonics will help when you get to the cranial nerves.

Oh, and I know this is obvious, but, don't miss class or lab! Pay attention and take notes! Take advantage of open lab time if it's offered.

Good luck!

The poster above me gave great advice. I'd like to add to study whenever possible (I do it in small increments throughout the day), versus waiting until the last minute.

Best wishes! :)

I made flashcards and post it notes which definitely helped!!! I put the post its all over my bathroom mirror and the head board on my bed etc. The flashcards I made by printing out pics of different types of tissues (that helped the most), bones, etc. On the post its I wrote vocabulary words and defs. Good luck!

Stay on top of the studying! Do whatever it takes to help all the information to stick - I found myself sitting at my desk today with my eyes closed making crazy hand motions and muttering the order in which the trachea branches out from bronchi to alveoli over and over again! But it made it stick and I passed the test so I didn't care how dumb I looked while doing it :D

try to get a head start maybe around august on studying. normally professors start on the first three chapters so thats what i would begin with. good luck to you, today was my last day of class !

Study some everyday, do not wait and then try to lump it together. Each week builds on the previous week, so don't skip or skimp. Steady study, everyday. Read ahead, even consider writing up some basic notes before lecture. Then fill-in during lecture, then rewrite them after. Make vocab word list that keeps growing everyday.

Oh and study everyday, did I mention *everyday* lol

Good luck, you can do it!

PS everyday!!

If your instructor does pictures for your practical, print them in black and white and color the different sections in and label them with a number. Have your key separate. that way you can quiz yourself or have someone else do it. Also like everyone has been saying study EVERDAY! Read ahead so you atleast have a basic knowledge of what the instructor will be talking about in class and if possible record your lecture to listen to later. That way if you missed something during class you can catch it on your 2nd or 3rd listen. GOOD LUCK!

I think recording lectures and emphasize studying on what was gone over in class. I went crazy trying to memorize everything in the book at first, but then I just listened to the recording and didn't really even open the book towards the end. I also found lab really helpful as it put everything together, so take advantage of your time in there! We couldn't take pictures of the models in lab so I had to find videos on youtube. Just write down the company of the model (ie. 3b anatomy model...) and find it lol. Also don't let people psych you out, it's not that hard just don't cram the night before.

Ask your instructor if you can record his lectures on the bones to make sure that you can recognize them. It helped us a lot in that class. Our bone tests were oral, so we had to make sure we knew them visually.

Don't try to cram at the last minute because you will fail! Definitely pace yourself and study in increments because it will be a lot of information. If you get diagrams to study that will be on your test, I suggest printing blank ones and going over them without help to see where you are with studying. When you go over organs and what they do as well as the brain, definitely make sure you can tell what each organ does. I also suggest study groups. Studying with someone will help you make sure you didn't miss any important material as well as the other person.

Don't wait for the last minute. Pay attention in lectures. This isn't a class that you can realistically cram for, and even if cramming works for you- your nursing career is dependent on you getting a competitive grade in this class. Give it the time and respect that it deserves.

It'll be a much more enjoyable experience if you stay prepared :)
