do you have to take seperate classes to be certified as a nurse out your state

Published

I'm considering applying for a job in a state outside of the one in which I am certified, but in the requirements page, they ask that you be certified as a nurse in the state. My question is, do I have to take separate classes in that state to be certified in their state? (the state is Texas)

States may have additional requirements if applying for licensure endorsement from another state. You should be able to find this information on the BON website. Texas's information on licensure by endorsement can be found here, including this portion:

Nursing Jurisprudence ExaminationYou must pass the Texas nursing jurisprudence examination prior to being issued a permanent license. Instructions on taking the Texas nursing jurisprudence examination:

  1. File an endorsement application with the Texas Board of Nursing
  2. Wait fifteen business days
  3. While you wait, prepare for the exam. We recommend that you:

    1. view a copy of the Nursing Practice Act (NPA) and Board Rules and Regulations on our website.
    2. take the online jurisprudence prep course on the Board's web site. This course is voluntary and contains information about the NPAand Rules and Regulations of the Texas BON.
    3. [*]After fifteen business days, follow the instructions to log on and complete the online nursing jurisprudence exam. The examination takes a maximum of two hours in length. If you are not successful in passing the examination or if the system locks up, you may retake the examination again after 24 (twenty-four) hours have elapsed from the previous attempt. The cost of the examination is included in your application fee.

In Alaska you actually have to work for free for a certain number of hours each year in order to be licensed. It's pretty insane.

Certified or licensed? Are you asking about nursing aides or licensed nurses? Are you really an RN, as your name suggests?

Traditionally, CNA's are certified. Nurses in all states are licensed.

Unless the state that you are licensed in/live in and the state you intend to work in are both compact states, you need a separate license for each state in which you intend to practice.

Pretty sure this is crazy-talk, given the source.

And BTW, it's separate, not seperate.

Mmm...I read too hastily at first. I see that 30 hours of "uncompensated professional activity" is not a necessity but a possibility for license renewal.

I wish my state had that choice instead of CE credits...

From the Alaska Board of Nursing Statutes and Regulations site, Statutes and Regulations, Nursing. Section 12 AAC 44.620. PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES REQUIREMENT begins on page 33.

(a) The board will accept professional activities toward fulfillment of the continuing competency requirements set out in 12 AAC 44.600 if the applicant documents

(1) completion of at least 30 hours of participation in professional activities for renewal of a license; and (2) that the hours of participation in professional activities were earned in at least one of the following ways:

(A) work with a professional nursing or health-related organization;

(B) authoring or contributing to an article, book, or publication related to health care;

© development and oral presentation of a paper before a professional or lay group on a subject that explores new or current areas of nursing theory, technique, or philosophy;

(D) design and conduct of a research study relating to nursing and health care;

(E) other professional activities approved by the board and included on a list that the board maintains; the board will approve only those activities that meet the definition of professional activities” in (b) of this section.

(b) In this section professional activities” means activities, performed without compensation, that use nursing knowledge and contribute to the health of individuals or the community.

You say you live in Texas. Is the state you are applying for a job to a compact state? If not, then the state may have requirements you may need to be licensed in that state.
