I agree elkpark that Ms. Nightingale was a product of her time. She was trying to reform nursing,in England,that until then was populated by drunks and women of ill repute. She was very particular about who she took on to train because she was trying to elevate nursing to a respectable profession for women. Doctors and administrators at the time were waiting for her to fail. She set standards and implemented improvements under great duress. I think that we are talking apples and oranges here. Hopefully we have progressed since the 19th century. I think we are better than this.

Shouldn't hiring be done on who is the best candidate for the job? Not on where they were trained or born but on their skills as a nurse?

I would have understood the anti-foreigners if they meant Filipino as a citizenship. I understand the need to help your countrymen. But if it meant Filipino as a race then >:-(

From what I read, the article says MIGRANT workers. That term is not used to denote citizens.

Next, The Civil Rights Act of 1964 applies to citizens and permanent residents (green card) ONLY.

The importation of Filipino nurses was allowed by the government to supplement nursing in the US because hospitals complained that there was a nursing shortage in this country.

With unemployment at 11 - 12% in CA (and 11% here in FL) and NG desperately seeking opportunities to work...there is absolutely no reason to hire Foreign nurses Filipino or otherwise. That is NOT discrimination.

next, the civil rights act of 1964 applies to citizens and permanent residents (green card) only.

do you have a source (name of publication and/or link) the the article referred to?

i can't find any reference to "migrant nurses". in california a green card or proof of us citizenship is required for a license.

this is an assumption.

the hiring data bears that out. a review by cna of active employee lists provided by cpmc demonstrates that in early 2008 there was a major demographic shift among the nurses being hired at st luke’s. before february 2008, 65% of st luke’s rns were filipino. after february 2008, only 10% of rns hired were filipino.

ok, but were native born, rn licensed citizens given priority? statistics can be aligned to make any point!

so...prove this had anything to do with it. it is like what is going on in the rest of the country...when you can win with facts, pull out the race card. the country is so sick of this that it is now becoming a liability to take this tact.

“our community needs access to healthcare and good jobs. sutter/cpmc’s discrimination against filipino nurses is another blatant example of the abuse that filipino migrant workers face in the united states,” said terry valen, on behalf of the filipino community center and the national alliance for filipino concerns.

“sutter and cpmc must be held accountable for providing immigrants and communities of color in san francisco access to permanent jobs and the healthcare we need in our community, not deliberate racial discrimination and medical redlining,” valen added.

ok...are we talking legal immigrants? it does not specify that.

“the first line of defense from discrimination is a strong union. sutter’s discriminatory practices against filipino nurses is as much about denying job opportunities as it is about punishing unionized filipina nurses at st. luke’s who stood up to sutter’s plans to cut services to our community,” said lillian galedo of filipino advocates for justice.

that is the issue, imho. it is all about power to a union and using the "minority" and race card to get it.

does sutter really believe that st. luke's has unlimited funds to provide free medical care? they would only "cut services" that aren't direct pay. when you emmigrate to this country, you must agree to pay your way and not become a burden on society.

what folks need to do is gather all the facts. what was really behind all this before the race card was played?

all nurses are required to submit a valid social security number before their application for licensure in california can be processed.

...disclosure of your social security number is mandatory. section 30 of the business and professions

code and public law 94-455 (42 usca 405 ©(2)©) authorize collection of your social security number.

your social security number will be used exclusively for tax enforcement purposes, for purposes of

compliance with any judgment or order for family support in accordance with section 11350.6 of the

welfare and institutions code, or for verification of licensure or examination status by a licensing or

examination entity which utilizes a national examination where licensure is reciprocal with the requesting

state. if you fail to list your social security number, your application for initial or renewal license

will not be processed....

i work with rns who graduated from bsn programs in the philippines who have been voting united states citizens for 15, 20 and more than 30 years.

i don't think the hospital administration i racist against filipino nurses. previously they recruited filipino nurses.

but the testimony of the former director of critical care clearly states that there was a directive not to hire filipino nurses.

whether the reason was retaliation for a group trying to keep the hospital in the community, racisim, or some other reason it is not ok. it is a violation of the law.

their fathers or grandfathers served with united states military in world war ii.

I work at CPMC and have almost daily interactions with Diana Karner. And let me tell you, the woman is not nice. She has her hands in everything and everybody is afraid of her. It was about time that some - former - staff spoke out - Kudos to them. Of course, all the others who sat in the meetings where she instructed on the hiring ban won't say a work until subpoenaed, again because of fear of loosing their jobs, such as the director of Med/Surg, HR/Recruiting Director, etc. they all were in those meetings.

CPMC lacks the leadership a place like that needs. Karner definitely is more interested in keeping her reputation clean, and getting her annual bonus - just ask the NP group, who are being slapped around by her daily. She doesn't care. If CPMC has the leadership they claim they do, they would go ahead and suspend Karner, pending an independent investigation into this matter. Browner stating is it "without merit..." doesn't help at all...just ask any politician who got into trouble and used the exact same defense statement. Three plus employees do not lie and I doubt the CNA would get into it, had they not researched the issue prior to a press release.

And then there is....the issue of Gavin Newsom's wife...Our Sf mayor's wife gave birth at CPMC's California campus and nursing schedules were changed, so only white nurses would be assigned to her...coincidence??? You tell me!:mad:

Please refer to the press release. Karner stated: "You are not to hire Filipino nurses, they are all related to each other..." If that's not discriminatory by and itself?!?
