Summer Jobs for Nursing Students?

Published

Hi: I was wondering if anyone had information on summer jobs for nursing students. I am finishing up my first semester of nursing school, and need to find a summer job where I can improve my clinical nursing skills. Does anyone know where I can work at/or possibly intern at? And, what kinds of positions would I be looking for? It seems as if the positions I am looking for require a certification. Please help! Thnx.!

After my first semester I worked as a CNA in a nursing home. I hated every moment of it BUT I learned a TON!!!! Personally I don't like working with the elderly and it wasn't "my thing" but I would really look into it. It really fine tunes all the skills you learned this semester things like lifting, bathing, oral care things like that you learn in the first semester. You could also look into being a CNA at a hospital.

I would think it is too late to get an internship at most hospitals most have you apply before December and want you to be at least 2 semesters away from Graduation... but FOR SURE apply for those next summer!!!! You won't get a better experience than that! Plus, many internships offer you a job after you graduate! And even if you don't want to work there, it gives you an edge when looking for jobs. I know that I got my job partly because of my internship experience.

Good Luck! :)

A lot of hospitals offer externships for nursing students, if you call human resources you can get that info. I worked as an extern at Winthrop, on Long Island, the summer before I graduted and I really enjoyed it. I think you have to have at least started clinicals in nursing school though, I don't know if they would take you after one semester.

Thnx for the info. Since I am working on my Associates degree to become a R.N., I am currently in my clinicals this first semester. Do you think they offer externships in NYC? If so, what hospitals would you focus in on?

I am not sure what hospitals in NYC do, just call HR and they will let you know. I don't know too much about the hospitals in the city so I can't really recommend one although if you are interested in Peds at all, Columbia has a great children's hospital.
