Hello, I am in serious need of some help in trying to secure clinical placement for January of 2013 in the Chicagoland area. Thus far I have networked with doctors at my hospital (found a cardiologist who was willing but I need internal medicine, peds and women experience, my hospital does not utilize the services of NPs), asked my kids' doctor, made visits to local clinics, networked through friends, and I have also asked my school for a list of preceptors that students had used in the past (they told me no of course). I even resorted to post on FNP websites on FB, yet no takers. I am an excellent student and a fast learner who just needs the opportunity to work with someone who is willing to precept.

Personally, I wrote up a letter of introduction, printed out many copies of my resume, and went online to find the office managers' names of the facilities that were in the area of my home. I went door to door until I secured clinical sites. That's basically it. Either I got in or I didn't. Another place that I tried was free clinics. They are typically welcome to students because they end up being an extra pair of hands to see the patients. I did my senior semester at one of these clinics and was very autonomous but passed everything by my preceptor. But with me there we were able to see more patients in a day.
Best of luck to you. It's not always easy to find a preceptor but once you get one, they typically refer you to their colleagues.
