I will be working as a student nurse extern on a Hematology/Oncology floor this summer. I am thrilled! Do you have any suggested reading to prepare me for working in this environment? I want to provide the best patient care possible and be well informed upon my arrival.
Thanks in advance!!
Oops! I misspelled oncology in the thread title! Please forgive! (I can edit the body, but not the title)

Congrats on your externship! I am doing the same thing (oncology extern) but working at an outpatient center. I started this semester and I absolutely love it.
This book (when I've had time to read it) is very non-technical, and more psychosocial in nature:
Carroll-Johnson, R., Gorman, L., & Bush, N. (2006). Psychosocial Nursing Care Along
the Cancer Continuum. Oncology Nursing Society: Pittsburgh.
You may also want to consider joining the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS). It is only $51/year for students, and you get monthly journals. There is a wealth of information on their website.

Thanks for your response! I actually am already a ONS member! I joined with the SNA discount, which made it about $24 or something. It is a great site indeed. Thanks for the suggestion for membership and a book. Congrats to you too for your externship.
Make sure to check out the scholarships that ONS offers!

Thank you BBQvegan! I also have a summer student externship position, but I will be in the cardiothoracic unit at a cancer hospital. I was just signing on to ask the same question.
