Studying to be a nurse in Canada and returning to the UK

Published

I am sorry if I have posted this in entirely the wrong place but I was wondering if anyone knows the answers to there?

I am thinking of studying to become a nurse after receiving both a BSc and MRes is psychology and psychological research methods respectively in the UK. My partner is canadian so I was thinking about studying nursing in Canada (at the University of Ottawa to be exact).

1. Will the course at the University of Ottawa be eligible for me to register as a nurse after completion in the UK? Or would I have to do further training?

2. I would ideally like to specialise in Mental Health nursing however in Canada you train in everything first and then specialise… would this affect me specialising once I return to the UK?

3. Will I be frowned upon when seeking a nursing job in the UK for carrying out my studies abroad?

Thank you in advance!!!

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Depends on the course and duration. Also NMC require 1-2 years post qualification experience and you will have to meet requirements for someone trained outside the UK. Training in Canada as a international student willbe expensive and lots of pre requisites. UK training is cheaper and aimed at the UK and if end result is live and work in the UK then doing training in the UK may be better

As an international student, you can expect to pay double the fees of a native or permanent resident. There are also large numbers of applicants for each chair in a nursing programme. One of my local university has roughly 10 applicants for every seat.

I hope you have back up plans as there are no guarantees for getting into a course.

Is there a reason you don't see Canada as being a permanent location for you? How do you plan to remain in Canada legally?
