I am a current student at RFUMS. We will be starting our last diadactic quarter before our 15 month residency.

We were a little surprised about the change in the Department Chair in the middle of the year. The new department chair has 30 years of cardiac experince and holds her PhD. RFUMS and College of Health Professions met with us and made it quite clear that the program is strong and moving forward.

They have added a few more clinical sites and have hired some top notch CRNA with expertise in OB / Regional Anesthesia / Pre-Surgical Evaluation. All of the recent hires already have their DNP. Makes sense with the school transitioning to a DNP program in a couple of years (I think by 2015). I believe we are up to almost 23 clinical sites with more on the horizon. Multiple clinical sites will expose us to a variety of anesthesia providors which should make was more well rounded on graduation.

RFUMS has just added a new section to the university that has a HiFi simulation lab. Very nice being that we are a front loaded diadactic program. It allows for some experince before heading to the OR.

Give RFUMS a good look when chosing programs to apply. The program is stable and growing. We are up for accredidation in 2012 (Right around the corner). I am sure that the accredediation information will be out before you apply. Applications are due August 31st for starting in the next March.

Thanks for all the great information about the program. I have looked through the website and am very excited about the program, just was a little hesitant when I heard this information. However, your insite helps. I am looking at attending an open house in the near future, so hopefully that will also help. Congrats on almost getting through your first year (I think), that is also a major acomplishment from what I hear.

Another question. Do you have any idea how the alternative list works at RF? I have a friend who is on it and obviously waiting very anxiously. Do you know about how many people are put on it every year? Is it true that she could find out that she has been excepted as close as a week before the program starts?

I know there is a wait list to ensure the class remains full if somebody drops out at the last minute. I dont know how they rank people for the list.

One of the girls in our class got a call 2 weeks before we started and she took the seat.

My guess is that somebody applied to multiple schools and found out late that they were excepted to thier first choice and that opened up a seat in our class.

You can always call the school and see if they can give you more insight into how it works.

No that is what my friend told me too, I just could not imagine dropping everything and being ready to start. Though I understand the situation a little bit now. I guess if you get put on an alternative list, you get ready to go just in case.

This is how I look at.

You already went through the process of being accepted into one of the hardest nursing professions to get into. You know you are on the list. Can you really pass up the chance to change your life. You may go through the whole process the next year and never get an interview.

There are 108 CRNA programs in the US. Not a lot compared to the rest of the graduate nursing programs. And the competition does not get any easier each year. Remeber, with each year, you are potentially going up against more people because they have reached the time requirment for acceptance.

Take it when offered, you can't be guarenteed you will get the option later.
