gpa question

I went to ohio state for a couple years straight out of highschool wasn't motivated whatever and ended up with a 2.4 gpa and then joined the army. Well after I got out of the army I went to kaplan for LPN school and got a 3.99. Then went for my adn at chamberlain and have a 3.92 there. I have an opportunity to go back to ohio state for their rn-bsn program. I was hoping to qualify for their "fresh start" program that would reset my old gpa but apparently 2.4 is too "high" for that. so if i go back there the best i can hope is to raise it up to a 2.9 (and maybe take a couple filler classes to make it a 3.0). Or I could just go to another college and truly start fresh. I've been accepted to Ohio University's rn-bsn program too so it's also an option. i don't want to do chamberlain or kaplan's rn-bsn programs because I'm out of gi bill and would rather go to a more affordable place. i like ohio state but i don't want to do it if it would be a nail in the coffin for my future. What should I do?? Go back to osu and try to resurrect my 2.4 or start fresh at ohio university?? do I have no chance at all for future crna because of my old college non nursing history?

Well i am kinda of the same path you are currently on. I had good gpa when i was in high school so when i went to troy after high school i messed around and wasnt serious. I went to air force and came back after i got out with 30 college credits, but i had to boost my gpa cummulative from 1.9 so all i had to do was go school get good grades and now im back to 3.0 gpa cummulative in a year of college. So, no its not impossible but it is hard work to bring your gpa back up high. I am also pursuing my bsn and goin to med school for crna so good luck and keep focus and you can do it :) thats what i tell myself every semester. Hope it helps

Wanted to let you know that you will be disclosing ALL of your transcripts, no matter what school you finish your bsn at, for crna school. so do not let that decide where you are going to go to school at...

they will calculate your gpa from all of your transcripts, many schools focus on only the last 60 credits, and also take your sciences and average the gpa's from those as well. so you have plenty of options to really really raise that gpa, esp since your rn-bsn will prob be around 30+ credits (half the 60 already!). Take some extra sciences and get A's...take some grad level sciences and get a's. It can be done.

Not sure if you were active duty after 9/11 if so you could qualify for post 9/11. I used all of my GIBILL and now I have a year of post 9/11. Hope that is useful for you.

Just like Missnurse01 said, you will have to disclose ALL transcripts to whatever CRNA program you decide to apply to. If they don't receive transcripts, your file is considered "incomplete" and you won't get an interview. So go wherever will be better for you and do well in your science courses. They will look at these. After your BSN, take a few graduate level courses like advanced pathophysiology and pharmacology. Do well in these and they will see that you can succeed in a CRNA program. Also, once you are an ICU nurse for one year, sit for your CCRN exam. This is becoming a very important piece to your resume.

And to boricuarn23, you do not have to go to med school to become a CRNA. It is an advanced practice Master's degree in nursing. Just saving you the trouble :)

You need to do your gpa for ALL of your courses. Every class, every attempt. The magic of starting over at a new school with a GPA is a moot point in your case. Figure out your cumulative GPA, kick butt in your BSN program, then figure it out again and see if you've reached a 3.0. If not, keep taking classes until you do.

You may not get into CRNA school even with all that but it's worth a shot, especially if you find schools that focus on last 60 hours or just nursing courses!
