Chances of getting into a CRNA program in NY?

Hi all,

Just want everyone's two cents.

Clocked 8 months of exp. in a community hospital CCU.

Now, I'm an RN in a big-name NYC hospital. I work in the SICU.

We predominantly take care of organ transplant patients (livers, occasional kidney, pancreas), open-heart overflow from the CTICUs (CABG's and valves), AAA's, TAVR's, Whipples, Hepatectomy's, etc.

Routinely see Swans, a-lines, CVP's. We manage CRRT.

And once in a blue moon, our unit will have someone on ECMO (these patient's are usually managed in the MICUs though).

I plan on finishing 1-2 full years here.

BSN GPA 3.6 (Chemistry, org. chem and science grades are all A's).

Will be getting my CCRN in an another month or two. Then I will focus on my GRE.

I've heard Columbia and the other NY CRNA programs are EXTREMELY competitive. Will I likely get in the first go around? Anything else I can do to prepare?

Aside from shadowing, exactly what else do you think there could possibly be to do? I've said it before, I'll say it again. If you meet the schools requirements, apply.

I work at Columbia. If you're dead set on going there, getting a position within one of their ICUs (specifically CT-ICU) will definitely boost your chances. SUNY Downstate (Brooklyn) and Rutgers (Newark) are options in the NYC area also, neither of which require GRE. Good luck with your CCRN!
