Academic violation and CRNA school chance

Students SRNA

Published

Hi so sophomore year of my undergraduate degree I was found guilty of cheating in a science class and received a Failing grade which i later retook for an A. I have long learned from this immature decision I have made and have been trying to grow from the situation since. I was wondering if my chances at any nurse anesthesia school is over because of this. It's always been my goal to become a CRNA and i don't know if am now just DOA because of this incident. even though it will be practically 5 years in the past from when i apply i don't know whether this goal is hopeless now or not.

No idea. I'd call/email the schools you're interested in and ask them. I'm sure they take it on a case-by-case basis. How long have you been a nurse? Are you in the ICU yet? Taken the GRE, CCRN?

I agree with above. It never looks good to have that on your record, but these kinds of things are why admission is based on more than just prior grades. While there's no way for us to know how it will affect your chances, you can still contact the directors of the programs you're interested in. This makes your name known to the program director prior to applications, and it gives you a chance to determine how they will view it when your application comes across for review. Just make sure when you apply that you choose references that will highlight your integrity as well as your skill and knowledge. Best of luck!

Why do you even need to reveal that to a potential anesthesia program?

Don't even mention the fact.

You retook the class and did well. End of story.

I don't see how this would effect you. Unless it's on a permanent record of some sort.

It's not on my undergraduate transcript however there is record of it somewhere within my undergrad university and certain schools ask in the application whether i have ever been subject to one, however, I realized not all do and I don't know if many CRNA interviews would bring up a F 5 years ago. However, i will try and contact some of the schools. I hope that due to the length of time it has been it won't keep my out :/

If you have to put it on the application then do it because you don't want to lie on your application. If they ask about it during the interview then own up to the fact that it happened and you have changed yourself for the better.

If you're a stellar candidate, I doubt that that one event will prevent your matriculation.
