Iam a nursing student and I was told that hospitals will hire student nurses to work as a unit secertary. Does anyone know if this true? I work at a restaurant now and would love to get a job related to the medical field. Any input or advise would be apperciated. Thanks.:)

A lot of hospitals will hire nursing students as a Nurse Apprentice after you have completed your 1st or 2nd semester. Check into that since it will give you the best experience for your education. I am a nurse apprentice and I am able to do as much as I did in clinicals. Today, I took care of a chest tube pt, and participated in my 1st code, AND got paid, pretty good too! Most hospitals work completely with your school schedule since they have to let you go if you fail school. They want you to succeed, so they (at least the hospital I work for) push that school comes first. During school I only work one day a week, but now that I'm out for the summer, I'm working 3. I work with one Registered Nurse and help her with her patient load. Check out your local hospitals and see if they offer this position.

Different hospitals have different things. I wish ours had externships but they don't. A lot of my classmates have different jobs at the hospital but none of them are HUCs

I primarily work as a tech/CNA, but most of my nurses are pretty good about letting me do what I can to learn...and watch many procedures...

i am a nursing student and i work as a unit secretary at a hospital. it's helpful with learning about different labs and diagnostic tests and what they are, why they're done, etc. i also just started working as a care assistant too, which gives me more hands-on experience dealing with patients. ive already seen some pretty cool stuff like dressing changes, foley catheters being put in, etc. you should try to find a job at a local hospital!

I work for a company that tests infants for their hearing. It's great! I work with the nurses/parents and do paperwork for the babies' charts. Most hospitals with post partum have hearing screen programs.

Thanks for all the advise. I did talk to one of the hospitals in my area and they told me that they have an externship when you are in your junior year. I think I'm just going to put my app in and see what happens.:)

You can be a unit clerk/secretary/ward clerk without being a student. There's no doubt there. Other on floor type positions...you may find that being a student you may get a position that is further along in skills or might get offered a position easier IF you have completed enough in your schooling.
