I'm only a CNA and we do not have an RN on board with our district. I am at a crossroads. I have a freshman student who came in today and she told me she was forced to have intercourse with her older cousin brother. Anyway, she told the hospital when she was seen before but I guess they did nothing but send her to a counselor to be seen. The assistant principal and I spoke with the mother and the mother thinks it might have happened years ago because it happened where they lived before they moved which was about 3 years ago. I was told to write a report on what had happened, but all I have is an accident report where the accident happened on school campus. I don't know if I should type out a report from MS Word and just place that in her file or use the accident report file. We also involved social services but that was already sent off and filed away now. This is the first incident that has happened with me, now i'm not sure where to begin at with documenting. Please help me out as in what I should do next.... I feel for this girl as I was in her shoes before when I was younger.

I would be making a call to CPS and the police.

Yes. In these situation you contact CPS. Even if you aren't sure, they can always consult with you.

This student just reported a rape. CPS needs to be called. You and the assistant principal are mandated reporters; you have to make the call.

i agree. Talk to her and see if she will tell you some more details (when, where, if drinking or drugs were involved, if she was threatened with a weapon) If she is not comfortable giving details - don't push. She needs to know that you are a safe outlet to come to. To me it doesn't matter if it was a few years ago - it still needs to be looked into. If cps has already looked into it then they will have a record of that. Police also should be called - in our state it's standard protocol to notify police if you make a notification to cps.

Yes, without a doubt. Today, make a Hotline call. I know that each state and the training is different. But, in Missouri. Mandated Reporters are not supposed to "investigate" a.k.a.- try to gather much more information than the student divulges. That is left up to Division of Family Services. I have a form that I made up to help me be prepared to answer the questions asked on the Hotline. I have attached it. Hotline calls can be very intimidating, especially the first few. But, the law say you must call. When you do this as soon as possible. Then, you will know, at the end of the day, you will have done all you can do. If you state mandates call law enforcement, or another agency, make sure you do that too.

I would be reporting to CPS and calling the police to report this.

Agree with all our co-workers. This is a rape. Forced intercourse is RAPE. Plus, she's a child.
OP, I'm so sorry this happened to you as well.
Please come back and let us know what's going on.
