Student FNP in need of a preceptor in LA area

Published

Hi all! I am a family nurse practitioner student and I am having a difficult time searching for a preceptor in the Los Angeles area. The preceptor can be a NP, DO or MD and needs to be in a non specialty area (minute clinic, family practice, quick care). Does anybody have any advice, or willing to be a preceptor?

There are services that you can pay if you need to find a preceptor and aren't having luck with finding a preceptor. They can get kind of pricey at 13-15 dollars per clinical hour. Some require a deposit.

And at this late date, next time work out the preceptor (free teacher) situation in advance.

Too many NP students and too few teachers who are willing to undertake this burden for a school that they do not have a teaching or contractual relationship with.

Can you blame them when the school receives monetary compensation in the form of tuition and the preceptor merely a dollar store certificate of appreciation and a handshake.

The preceptor issue is the best kept secret in nursing education. But since it is a inconvenient truth, why seriously address it and let it interfere with the gravy train?

I wish you all the luck in the world with this, I really do, but you like many others have been deceived by the nursing educators who have historically passed the buck to the business entities of the schools who in most instances see the preceptor issue as your problem not theirs.

Until a guarantee, by any school, promising substantive access to preceptors in writing happens, why engage in an expensive crap shoot?

Moral of the story: patronize the schools that do.

Again, good luck with this.

This site has a list of NP organizations that has preceptors listed http://www.theagapecenter.com/…/Spec…/Nurse-Practitioner.htm. The link is broken so you will have to copy and paste the organization name into the search engine. You can also check out https://npfinder.aanp.org to locate a preceptor. I hope that this helps.
