Dear Nurse Beth,

How do you reinvent yourself as a nurse/NP when you have been in the same field for 20 plus years (ICU). Will be graduating as an FNP. Currently trying to find a job until I am an NP but no one thinks I am qualified to do anything but ICU.

Dear ICU,

It can be challenging when you feel you are pigeonholed.

With ICU experience, you could try Cath Lab, or be a clinical instructor for your local nursing program. There's also Interventional Radiology. I'm trying to think of day jobs, assuming that'd be best while you're in school.

Have you tried ED? It's a different skill set, but it overlaps, and you would be an asset with critical patients.

Have you considered just staying in the ICU for now because you're a short-termer and will be graduating as an NP

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
