I have taken the math placement test at CSN two or three times already and I keep placing in Math 97 which is the class below Math 120/124 which is what I need to get into nursing school. I get straight A's but I cant seem to get into this math class. I know if I could just get into the class I would do well but math has never been my strong suit. This dilemma is stressing me out. I am already registered for math 97 for the upcoming semester but if I could somehow place into 120 it would be much better for me to not have to worry about it anymore. I have tried the placement practice questions and it is just too overwhelming to study for too long just to place into 97 once again.
Any tips or advice or even encouragement would be greatly appreciated

You are not going to like what I have to say, but take math 97. You have tested into it multiple times, so it's most likely a good idea for you to take it before moving on. It's all for the best, I had to take a intro Chem class before I could a true college level Chem class. I didn't like it at the time, but it turned out to be a good thing as I was the only student to get an A in Chem (not an easy feat at my school).
Take the course and learn everything you can. Good luck

I know it seems like a waste of time, but it will save you much heartbreak later on to have a good foundation in math before approaching the harder class.

I know your pain I am in the same boat. I need to get up to math 1040 which I need to take 1010 before that, i cannot even take my chemistry until i take 1010. well i tested for the class just below that the 990. there is one class below that which is 920. i borderline tested into 990. so honestly i decided that i did not have a firm grasp so i took 920, that was last semester. I AM SOOOO glad I did!! bThis semester I am taking 990. yeah im behind a semester or 2 from where i'dl like to be but as our nursing advisor says do not sacrifice grades for speed. Math is something you WILL use, you will see it on your TEAS test also. My advice is to take the class you tested into. if not you would possibly ending up having to take the higher one over because you don't have that firm foundation. grades are SOOOO important in these highly competitive nursing programs. i am a mom of 4 , in my 30's and i need to graduate like yesterday, but i finally realize that rushing is not going to help me get into the program. like a pp said it may feel like a waste but it really is not. i don't know if you are working towards your associates or bsn but if you end of just having that leftover math and nothing to take with it, maybe start taking classes towards that bachelors..a history, humanities, etc. anyhow good luck with whatever you decide :)

Yea I am trying for a bsn but of course this is the only class I have trouble in. ugh...statistics im a wiz at but algebra alludes me. Thanks for the advice guys...it just sucks that I cant just take the stupid class already. I have taken this class before at another school but the credits won't transfer so now I have to take it again! Bah humbug.

Do you know what, specifically, you have trouble with? I had no trouble with the concepts of algebra but had some bad habits in the operations that slowed me down so much I never did well on tests. If it is something like that for you, you might be further ahead by fixing the problems than by going around them by taking the lower level class.
its more about familiarity for me...I need to be in the groove of doing math all the time in order to be successful in it. I know if I could just take the class all would be fine but its getting into the class thats the problem. I can't just use a study guide and pass the placement test, I would just need to be in the class already to understand. Hope that makes sense. I am going to be so annoyed at how simple and easy Math 97 will be and I know it will feel like a waste of time.
