Stressing over scrubs.

Published

If this is not the appropriate place to post this, please feel free to move it. I did my best trying to figure out where it would go!

I am starting a CNA training course on monday in a local nursing home and I need to purchase scrubs for it. They can be any color, any print as long as they are 'appropriate.'

Firstly, do they make inappropriate scrubs? Or do they mean, no Hello Kitty and bright cartoony scrubs near the geriatric residents?

Secondly, I have no idea what to buy. I am freaking out. Having the option of print tops intrigues me, because personally, I think some of what they have to offer is absolutely adorable-- and I'd love to take advantage of the opportunity to wear them--- as immature as that sounds, haha. But I'm also a big fan of classic and clean cut style, which is better reflected in plain solid colors-- which I have no problem wearing, and actually probably prefer.

The problem arises when considering where I will end up working. In my area, I have the oppurtunity to work at several different hospitals and LTCs. I have no idea what any of their uniform policies will be, nor do I have any idea where I will end up working.

I'm a student in a BSN program, and like most, I am broke. I do not feel like spending a bunch of money for a few sets of scrubs to wear for a three week training course that I won't be able to wear again.

What are my safest bets? Navy and burgandy? Or what? What should I doooo? :trout:

I would recommend buying a couple pairs of plain colored scrubs for your clinicals. Geriatrics tend to enjoy the brighter colors over plain white and the darker colors like navy and burgandy...from my experience atleast. IMO, it looks more professional and put together, especially for students.

If you go to a uniform store look on the bargain rack. I got nice scrubs for like $12 on a sale rack, and they are cute! I would get maybe 3 tops and 2 pants. White pants are always good since they match anything. I wouldn't buy too many until you actually start a job. And beleive me, when you get in the store and see all the cute ones you want to get them all! Dickies makes the most comfortable pants by the way...but are pricier at around $25.

Inappropriate scrubs would mean things like too tight, too loose, too see through. Since they did not specify any colors or prints you can probably pick out something pretty. Have fun.

If you work with geriatrics appropriate would include solids and prints. By all means wear prints, all my residents loved the prints. I have paisley, pink hearts, a 4th of July top, flowers....No cartoon characters. I like having a lot of solid bottoms with matching tops then also having a lot of prints to go with the pants I already have.

Make sure the pant legs don't drag on the floor.

Make sure the top is long enough that it doesn't ride up when you bend down.

Make sure they are comfortable to move in but no so baggy that you look like you're swimming in them.

Make sure ther are ironed or at least toss them in the dryer to let the wrinkles out! Wrinkles are my pet peeve.
