Strep throat

Published

Hi all...I need some feedback...

I'm 21 yrs old..I have strep throat right now..for the third time this year. Everyone keeps telling me that I'm too old to be catching this kind of infection--unless say for example I work in a school around lots of kids. I do remember as a kid having this often. The only time I go to the doctor is for strep infections and well-woman check ups..thats it..I usually don't have any other major problems.

My mom thinks I should go to an ear, nose, throat specialist. Any of your knowledgable thoughts appreciated.... thank you

Listen to your mom!. Please go ASAP. Strep will attack your heart valves if not tx ASAP.

Don't take any chances.

My daughter, last year came down with strep. She was tx w/antibiotics but it came back 3 months later. It turns out she needed a stronger dose of the same antibiotic.

I made sure she finished the tx both times.

She has not had any problems since. If is shows up again, I will take my kid to an ENT specialist.

Take care.:)

Do you still have your tonsils. My stepdaugher had repeated sorethroats and strep infections. Come to find out she had a chronic infection in her tonsils that the standard treatment Amoxil, E-Mycin and ect didnt get rid of. She saw the ENT doctor who treated her with double antibiotics and then removed her tonsils and adnoides. This was 5 years ago and no bacterial sorethroats since.

The strep may be colonized in your tonsils- just lies there until your immune system is off and then presents itself. ENT referral - more than likely those tonsils have to come out. :)

yeah...what they said....if left untreated, strep can lead to kidney infections........Listen to your momma!!!!!!!!

good thoughts to you and hope you feel better

definitely go to the ent doctor.

this is not normal.

and left untreated causes a multitude of serious complications; endocarditis, renal insufficiency; and (what's that dance called...it begins with an r and it's manifested by involuntary movements of arms/legs}

seriously sweetie,

your mom is right this time.

make an appt asap.

i agree with everyone on this. just from experience. definately speak to your md, 3x this year is alot when it comes to strep.

oddly enough, just a few months ago i went to a 'walk in clinic' c/o severe sore throat which i've had x1 week, i knew it had to be strep since every sore throat i've ever had lasted 2 days and were tolerable. i had to repeatedly ask the dr on duty to do a swab, she kept saying, 'i don't think it's strep!!'. guess what? 1 day later. diagnosis-strep!!! glad i didn't back down!

Just so I'm sure what we're talking about (I work with the college population who often refer to any sore throat generically as "strep throat") you do mean a confirmed case of bacterial strep? Has your doc done a culture and sensitivity to confirm that that is what it is and that the appropriate antibiotics are being given? (I'm guessing yes, but just in case, I'm a fan of doing simple first.)

Well I went to the doc today...they did a quick swab test, came back negative..BUT that has happened to me in the past, they'll call a week later and say "you actually did have strep, need a rx?" but if you saw the huge globs of white bacteria on the back of my throat you'd see something is up... so i'm on amoxil 500 QID

I also went to an ENT as well today, and he suggests I get my tonsils out...so guess I have to get that set up soon...looks like i'll be a miserable person over xmas break. Thank you all of those who posted...even tho they made me a little nervous...it'll work out eventually! Thanx
