Still no one from hospital would hire even after 1yr

Published

Hi guys, I graduated last may with my RN-BSN. I live in the Northern Jersey area, in NJ. I am pretty discouraged at the fact that I can bare find a job as a nurse right now. Currently I work per diem at a long term facility for exactly a year now. In the winter, they would ask me to work 5-7 shifts a week for them. But now, since the holiday season is over. I don't even get any hours anymore so practically, I don't even have a job. I have been applying to hospital everywhere within a 35 miles radius from me. No where calls me back. Everywhere, it's either 2+ years of experience; it's ridiculous.

I really want to get into Nursing IT, but I don't even know where to start. I don't mind bedside nursing, but it's just that I don't learn anything here so it's getting extremely boring to the point where I don't even want to do this anymore. I want to get into a hospital and start working.

I thought I want to back to school for MSN FNP. But I don't even know anymore; I'm in the process of applying to start this fall.

I just wanted to vent.

If you guys have any advice on how I could get into nursing IT, it would be great. I tried applying for EPic and Eclinicalworks but no go.

thanks for listening guys!

Would you be willing to relocate to another state/city?

The most common pathway to informatics is via initial involvement as a clinical super-user in a patient care department. EHR companies such as Cerner, Epic, Meditech, etc. hire nurses in a variety of positions, but these usually require extensive experience with EHRs.

You could also obtain a post-bacc certificate in Healthcare Informatics. There are quite a few programs online & the largest programs are frequently contacted by recruiters who need to find qualified candidates for Informatics jobs. Here is a great site for more info on these programs & the field in general https://www.ania.org/

A 35 mole radius is very small. That's like 5 hospitals.

Boy oh boy please move to North Dakota. You will land more than 3 jobs as a new grad.

Not for many folks. Based on a town mentioned in a previous post, and going to medicare.gov, the OP appears to have 50 or more hospitals within 35 miles. That's a healthy sample size.

Nneokill,

since you worked so many hours for LTC in the winter, have you asked for permanent employment. It will help your finances, and your resume. Try to build up that experience while you continue your search.

And do you want to be a FNP, or get into IT? You need to focus on one goal. There are nursing informatics groups with websites, meetings, people to contact. You need to prepare yourself so that you have the skills that the employer wants.

Finally, I hope your email isn't nneokill or anything equally odd. Be sure it's something reflecting your professionalism.

Even though i only applied to 35 miles radius around my area; that's still around 20+ hospital. I gave up and applied to another longterm rehab facility. I just don't understand how they're going to hire me into med surg based on my long term care alone.

I'm starting two advanced classes towards my FNP program this fall. That's my goal so far. Nursing informatic is something I will have to figure out. BUt eventually, I do want my FNP.

I just want to get med surg experience in a hospital.
