Hi, all! I have been a sterile processing tech for almost a year now, have learned so much, and really enjoy it. I am interested in OR nursing. Will sterile processing help me? Thanks.

Are you looking to become a circulating nurse or a scrub nurse?

Either way, being in sterile processing, you become very familiar with instruments (or at least you should).  Know the names and what they are used for- what kind of trays they are used in.  If you don't - start quizzing yourself.  As you are processing instruments, ask yourself "what is this? what is it used for?"  This will help you immensely in the future. As a circulating nurse, if you have to retrieve an instrument from SP thats in peel packs, you will know what you are looking for.  If you become a scrub nurse, you will already have a heads up on instrumentation when you are working off of preference cards to scrub in with surgeons.
