STD question

sweetieann sweetieann (Member)

I have a question about urine STD tests. They tell you to wait 1-2 hours before urinating before collecting sample or to use first morning void. Do you think this is really necessary? Aren't those tests pretty sensitive? I mean, if you have enough pee to collect a sample (even if you peed a half hour earlier), wouldn't the chlamydia or gonorrhea DNA still be present?

thoughts/opinions?

I think the reason they tell you this is to ensure the urine is not diluted from excess of fluids. Taking the sample from the morning's first void, the urine is always highly concentrated, having been from overnight. If the urine is very diluted you may get a false negative result. Hope this helps!
