50-state odyssey to find bone marrow donors

So many cities. So many miles. So many lives to save.

SAM (Sharing America's Marrow), a collaboration of two sisters and a friend, is on a nationwide mission to sign up bone-marrow donors. It is a journey both personal and profound.

Five years ago, Sam Kimura, now 22, of Louisville, Ky., was diagnosed with a rare blood disease, aplastic anemia. She needed a bone-marrow transplant for a cure but couldn't find a match, not even with her sister and best friend, Alex Kimura, 24...

Sharing America's Marrow (SAM) was created to find a donor for Sam, and for the thousands of other patients fighting blood cancer and blood diseases who are searching for a hero to give them a second chance at life.

SAM will be traveling to all 50 states in 2015 with a goal of registering 50,000 donors with Delete Blood Cancer!

June 10, 2015 from 12:00 - 1:15 p.m. CT.

This free telephone education workshop will educate patients about the basics of stem cell transplant, HLA matching, how a doctor searches for a donor, caregiver and survivor experiences, and resources available to the patient and family.

I am on the marrow registry with Be the Match. Got called once when I was a match for someone, but their condition deteriorated before I could actually donate. :( I try to live by the Golden Rule and would definitely want someone to donate to me or mine.

I am also on the Be The Match registry. My students and I sponsored a drive as a class project and got 20 people signed up in our little town. We were quite proud of ourselves.
