State Facility or Hospital Ward?

Hey all you psych nurses out there.

I will be a new grad soon and am interested in psych nursing. My mom was a psych RN at a state facility and she recommends I go to a psych floor at a hospital instead of a state facility.

I was wondering what insight you could give me and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would think in a state facillity you would see more severe or chronic cases. These individuals would be more prone to agressive or extreem behaviors you prob wouldn't see as much of in the community setting. Get your feet wet in a community hospital then if you so chose look into a state position if you find psych still to your liking.

I don't know where she worked, but I do work at a state facility. I am the recruiter and I am also a registered nurse. I worked in the private sector for many years and though I had wonderful experiences, I often wish I had come straight here. The benefits are good (NC) though we don't get raises as often as the private sector and our retirement is better than the community hospital. You can learn so much more at a state facility than working on a psych floor. We get the committments and alot of the uninsured with some really severe problems. We also get the patients that the hospital dumps out when their insurance stops paying. We have acute admissions, psych reheb, geriatrics and adolescent. So, it depends on what you want to do. A little of it or a lot!
