Starting nursing school with a 3 year old

Published

Hi! I am a pre nursing student and I applied for the practical nursing program this September 2016. I am a little hesitant about starting this year because I have a 2 year old son but he will be turning 3 when I start the program. I have had people tell me I should wait until he is 5 and in Kindergarden. But I have been working really hard these past 2 years completing these prerequisites. I will be finished my last prerequisite next month. As I said, I applied already and I am very excited to start it. Any advice for me? Should I just go ahead and start the program this September or should I wait a couple more years?

I started my program when my tot was 1.5 he keeps me going when I don't want to. Just stay on top of the reading. Schedule study time and play time you can totally do it

I start in Sept '16 too! my daughter will be 2.5years old:)

I just finished my pre-reqs last semester with a 3.4gpa! That's the best I've ever done in school, ever! Why?! Because I have a little angel motivating me lol.

Don't ever feel like something's impossible because your a Mom. Being a mom is what makes us superwomen;)

As I'm sure you all know, us moms get s*** DONE!

Thanks! I will try to manage my time well, that's a must when having a toddler! :)

Oh wow good for you! :D I don't know what my GPA is yet because I am still working on my last prerequisite. And you are right about us moms! We are super motivated and get....Done! LOL

Good luck. You have your hands full :yeah: I agree with the part about putting it off. My son will be around 4 when I'm done. I'm glad to be doing it when hes really young.

How do you deal with being away from your kids? Hes with my mom while I'm in class but it's hard. It mqkes me feel sad and lonely. I'm in class 4 days a week.

OM gosh... How blessed to be in your shoes! Many do not have grandparents who can help you shoulder the burden of school, kids, homelife etc. I am so glad that you are able to focus on your schooling without having to worry if your main priority, (YOUR CHILD) is being cared for properly. Many do not have that luxury.

I have a 6, 4, and 14 month old. You just gotta prioritize. I do have an awesome husband that picks up major slack for me though in the parenting duties when school is in session though, it would be hard for me to do it without him. I don't have a social life and I am almost always going 100 mph but it's only for the short term. Good luck!

That's great you have such a supportive husband that helps around the house and with the kids. I'm sure that makes a big difference! All the best to you! :)

As I've seen many others say, go for it! Think of it this way- if you do it now, you will be DONE (or close to done) by the time he is in kindergarten! I have a 2 y/o and a 6 y/o and am applying to start in the fall. Honestly, in figuring out childcare plans it is more difficult with my grade schooler because her bus doesn't pick up until 8:40 and drops off at 3:40, so I need care for an odd hour here and there. With having a 3 year old, the daycare is open early if I need to go to class early, etc. Basically their time is more flexible before school starts.

And I'm sure you already do this, but thank your mom every single chance you get. Show her your good grades and remind her that your success is her success. She is giving you an incredible gift!

I'm in my second semester and I have 2-year-old twins. Time management is essential--keep up with readings/assignments, and get ahead whenever you can!

You can do it!!

Specializes in CNM.

I completed an accelerated MSN (pre-licensure) program with 4 children...my youngest just turned 4 and my oldest is 8. My youngest was 2 when I started the program. Time management is essential for nursing school, especially if you have children. Be prepared to do your studying at night, once the kids are in bed. You can certainly do it! Two of my friends in nursing school also completed the program with 4 young children, and we had several other students with young children :-)

Yes I'm very thankful. She takes great care of him. That's another motivator for me to make straight A's.
