Start new LTC job tomorrow in a huge facility

Hello. I found this forum I guess kinda by mistake. I didn't realize there were so many different forums here. As a LTC nurse most of my career, you might see me here now from time to time. I've worked in many different facilities and I start orientation tomorrow in the biggest one yet. This particular one is 154 beds but I think in the actual ICF they have 120 (their RC must make up the rest). Anyway, I will only be working weekends, 2p-10p and the station I will be working at only has 26 residents. I liked the sound of that...starting off with fewer residents instead of something like house supervisor for the full she-bang. The last facility I worked at, I was in charge of all their residents, but they only had about 20. So I'm excited!

Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself and post my first thread here.

Welcome Michelle,

Hope you find allnurses to be a great resource professionally and personally. I work in LTC as well 2 days as a facility supervisor.

The orientator/preceptor today was a CNA...she was so very helpful with a tour of the facility...showed us where the fire pulls were, extinguishers, door alarms etc.

On a break, I found myself at a table with about 6 other CNA's. Knowing which station I would be assigned to, I asked the others which station they thought was the hardest (withholding which station I would be at). Well, they all said my station...now I get a sinking feeling in my gut. I'm going to really be challenged here...I only have 26 residents but most of them are total care/Hoyer lifts or wandering dementia patients. Well, I go back on Thurs. to watch some more movies then shadow the nurse in the afternoon on my station. I'm still excited, but now also a bit apprehensive. Surely with just 26 residents, things cannot be that bad. I will have to call back on my old nursing knowledge when 60 residents were under my care in a skilled ICF. Wish me luck everyone!

Good luck to you, I'm sure you'll do well. Maybe it isn't that hard, and the others just have easy assignments.:hgu:

Don't give too much importance to what others say- you might find something in that unit that they didn't. Give your all to the job- do the best you can and don't compare what you're doing to others, it'll only make you feel bad.

Truth is its best to start on the hardest unit- if you can make it there you can make it anywhere!!!

Show 'em what you're made of!!!

Okay...I think the ADON told me the wrong station and she had to leave early today so I have to call tomorrow and find out. The station she told me I'd be on actually has 40+ residents and all total care. The station that has the 26 residents she told me are mainly all independent and I'd only have 1-2 CNA's then I'd charge and pass my own meds. So I will have to confirm which one, before I become apprehensive.
