I was recently hired in at a trauma 1 level hospital. I applied for the ER PCT(tech) position and they offered me a position as an extern student nurse with an option to join their ER residency program once I graduate in December. I always wanted to work in the ER but a lot of nurses are saying that I should apply for a med-surg position before I jump into the ER.

ER allows you to branch into other specialities easier than med/surg will. That's what I'd choose.

An opportunity like that is a fantastic one. Grab it fast.

Yeah, go the ER route. If you want to work in a slower, less advanced area thereafter, you'll be way ahead of the pack.

If you want ER and they're willing to take you as a new grad, go for it. You don't have to start in med/surg.

Go for it. If ER is something you see yourself doing take the opportunity your given! Sounds like an awesome opportunity!
