Hi. I'm a senior nursing student currently in my last semester, completing my preceptorship in a pediatric unit.
My school recommends taking part in a PALS program. The university where I am doing my preceptorship offers different prices for a PALS class depending whether or not contact hours are needed.
I tried contacing their nursing education department, but they are closed for the weekend.
Can someone please explain to me what are contact hours? Can I receive contact hours now although I am not yet an RN?
Thank you!!!

A contact hour is a unit used to qualntify continuing education.
I think you need to contact your state board to see if contact hours earned before licensure can be applied to the contact hours required after you obtain your license.
It's a good question.

Another thought: The hospital might not be an approved provider by ANCC. Therefore, to offer CE's they have to pay a fee for the course to ANCC. Then they pass the fee on to the students. Weird though. We charge everyone the same and if they don't need CE's that is their business, not mine.

Clarification:
One Continuing Education UNIT (1CEU) = 10 Continuing Education HOURS (1CEH).
In other words, if you were to take a 3 unit college class that has been approved by the BRN, you have completed 30 CEH.
Hope this helps.
