My DH has been to transferred to Houston, I only have 4 months experience as an RN on a pulmonary stepdown unit. Due to financial reasons, I don't think I'm going to be able to stay here in Ohio for 8 more months. I do have my permanent Texas RN license. Are there any hospitals I should apply to with little experience? I am willing to work in nursing homes, are there any websites that specialize in nursing home positions?

My husband has an apartment in Far Northwest Texas (between Cypresswoods and FM 1960 off N249) I think the downtown medical area is not going to be the best due to traffic!

Any advice would be appreciative!

Welcome to Houston!!!

Be forewarned - our summers are tropical and so far, this one is a record-breaker; we're already into triple digits. It's too bad you can't wait until it's cooler to make your move. That usually happens around October.

I would suggest applying to Houston NorthWest Medical Center & CyFair hospital. Depending on traffic patterns, the Woodlands may not be a bad commute for you either. You'll probably be surprised with job availability compared to what other parts of the nation are experiencing. Since you are going to be new to Houston traffic, I think Home Care may be pretty stessful. Most agencies cover a very wide territory including areas that I would be very reluctant to visit.

Best of luck to you!

Actually, based on location & specialty, I suggest applying to Methodist Willowbrook, St. Luke's The Vintage, and Tomball Regional as these have IMUs.

Also, you really ought to try to stay at your current job as long as possible- at least another 2-4 months. Then you could try calling HR and talking to them about your situation to see if you could get an interview as most positions still prefer >1 yr experience.

Thanks for the information, I'm really trying to hang in here and get some more experience under my belt, but trying to maintain 2 households is getting really tight...

I had to leave my first RN position after 6 months a year ago do to relocating, and didnt have any problem finding a job in Houston. They didnt like my little experience, but they said they lied my personality and enthusiasm-- so really sell it during your interviews!! For example, the job I have now required 2 years experience and an BSN because it is in the medical center, and I got it with only 6 months exp and an Associate Degree...

You can also try North Cypress Medical Center off 290/huffmeister..it is a little further, but it is another option if the others dont hire you. Also, if you have a heartbeat, Triumph will hire you-- it is a LTAC but starting pay for new grads is $30 an hour DAYS with 6 : 1 nurse patient ratio. I turned it down because I love the specialty I am in and wanted to hold out a little longer for the perfect fit.

I turned down 2 other jobs , one at North Cypress medical Center and another at an HCA hospital. Totally stupid of me looking back, but I ended up getting my dream job, so it all worked out!!!

Hang in there! You will find something in Houston, just don't give up !!! I didn't :)

Thank You so much for the words of encouragement, I have applied to Triumph, and a few other places, can't exactly remember where now. I just spent a week in Houston on vacation (if thats what you want to call it, and OMG was it HOT!!!!) Hopefully, I will start to hear something soon.

I suggest that you apply at Kindred Northwest. It is an LTAC and they are hiring. Even with little experience. And it would fit right in with the experience you have in pulmonary stepdown. The pay is real good also with all the overtime you might want. They also recently aquired the Triumph hospital system so they will have another 15 hospitals to work at here in Houston.
