I just graduated and am due to begin working as a GN in 10 days. Yesterday, we got the news that my husband has been transferred! I have a two-year contract with this facility. How is this handled? Can I switch to another facility that is owned by the same parent company? He was transferred to another county, not state, but it would still be too far to travel. Who do I speak to first?

Hi Kristin,
I notice you are in Florida, just wondering which facility you are contracted to? I ask because I have just signed with Florida Hospital and I asked them about switching locations before I signed. I was told that I could move around to different locations and work at any of their sites during my contract. Once you are an employee of theirs, you can work at any of the Florida Hospitals. Maybe the same thing applies to other companies, I'm not sure.

if you haven't exchanged any money so far, i can't see the problem with you getting out at this point in the game if you have to. now, if they have paid for part of your school, loans, etc, that might be a problem. I would tell them before you start your orientation...
Unfortunately, they paid for my school. I worked hard to get this position; the tears haven't stopped. I've even been trying to find another job for hubby (even though I should be studying for NCLEX) ......
the WORST that could happen is that you'd have to pay it back with a little bit of interest. i know that my hospital said that if we had to break our contracts it would be a monthly payment type deal until its paid back... with the loan ending at the time it would have been forgiven. at least at my hospital, the rate was really reasonable. they gave us all that info in the paperwork we signed.
i really believe that if there is a major unplanned change that there is always a reason for it... i can't imagine how my life would be right now (probably really bad!) if i hadn't had some big, unplanned changes!! i hope that this the case for you. good luck!!

What did your contract originally state that you signed when they offered to pay for your schooling? There should have been something stated right in there. I would check that out first.
You did sign something back then, didn't you?
