Hi everyone! I am finally graduating this Saturday. I applied all over the seacost area and most hospitals' new grad programs were already filled by April. Seems like there aren't that many opportunities for new grads at the moment up there. I do have an interview scheduled with SMMC in 2 weeks. Does anyone know anything about them? I'm moving to the area so I don't know too much about their reputation. It's looking like my only lead right now so I can't be too picky, but I'm not even sure if they have a new grad orientation program? Any info would be greatly appreciated!!! :)

I'm not too familiar with SMMC. I hear it's pretty good. No, there aren't a lot of new grad positions open up here. The schools here have graduated so many nursing students that it's taken some a while to get hired (3-6 months), although I know plenty who've gotten hired right out of nursing school. Many of the hospitals have also cut way back on their travel nurses. I guess we just don't have a shortage up this way.

I have worked at SMMC since I graduating nursing school almost 10 years ago. It is a great place to work, small hospital with med surg/tele/ICU/woman and infants/peds/mental health and ER. They treat the employees very well and although the pay is a few dollars less than MMC in Portland, I feel the payoff in working in a smaller hospital is much more rewarding. SMMC does hire new nurses and dont put you on the floor alone until you have completed the whole orientation. You also sont have to be stuck on nights forever waiting for a day position to open up. I worked at SMMC for 15 years. Leaving to return to Dialysis.

It's a nice little hospital. Some census problems now and then. A lot of call offs. I keep in touch with many there.

I am a travel nurse now.

I just heard they were gonna go to 1:7 on third floor..M/S.... YIKES.

It was a realiable source. So I don't know.
