South Alabama Pediatric NP

Published

Hey Guys,

Any current or former USA PNP students care to share their experiences? Course formats? Material presentation? Communication style between students or faculty? Difficulty or ease of finding preceptors? War stories or tales of triumph?

As reviews go, some are very scary and some are pretty encouraging. I'm just looking for new perspectives.

I am looking for an online PNP program, and I can't ignore the tuition rates and ease of application. I'm a little worried I'm going to regret trying to save money. I've seen a lot of posts for the institution that remind, "you get what you pay for", but as a regular bargain shopper, I know that good deals do exist, and I'm hoping that this is one of them.

So please share, even if its to crush my dreams :)

Oh and I'm also looking at Drexel's PNP program as well, so information about it would be greatly appreciated as well.

Thanks!

I have applied for the FNP/DNP at the University of South Alabama. I am currently a PMHNP and went to UNC. I have a fellow PMHNP co-worker who graduated from the University of South Alabama. She is an excellent NP, recently graduated a few years back. I have researched this school and will answer what I can:

The course is an mostly online format, with face time between students and professors to promote class discussions. A few campus visits are required as well. They base their admissions on first GPA and then nursing experience. They are very selective in their admissions. She said the program is very challenging, hence all of the bad reviews. Mostly people go out of their way to post negative comments when not successful. Their tuition is a bit lower because they are a public university and prices vary state to state. The University of South Alabama has a large university hospital and an associated medical school. My co-worker said she did not have any problems during her program. If you have a hard time finding preceptors, they will provide them but you must go to Alabama (I already asked this question). Good Luck on what you decide!

Thanks, Carlyjo. Your insight is helpful and refreshing. I know reviews are just a slice of a single person's experience, but a good one is still encouraging to hear.

I'm again drexel for primary PNP. There are issues...but I wouldn't change my decision to attend drexel. I'm very happy despite the issues.

Thank you for the information, I applied to their PNP program for Fall 14'. I was accepted to St. Louis University for their PNP program starting this Fall, I'm holding out making a decision until I hear from USA which should be in a few weeks.

Take a look at SLU's program. There is 1 campus visit and it has gotten great reviews, it is just very expensive.
