Hi- I am beginning an ADN program in January and am interested in school nursing as a career. I have a BS in Health Education and Sociology and was a middle school teacher before deciding not to renew my contract last year to pursue nursing. I was curious to know from experienced school nurses what some of the pros and cons are to school nursing? Thanks!

Hi Kim, I am a nursing student now in an ADN program. I too, have a BS degree and was a teacher prior to nursing school. While I do not have an answer to your question, I would like to know what further schooling, if any, I will need to become a school nurse. Will I be able to work as a school nurse or assistant school nurse with the education I will have at the end of my ADN program? Or, will I have to pursue further education? Is anyone able to answer these questions? Thanks.

Both of you need to contact your respective state organizations as school nursing qualifications varies state by state. Go to http://www.nasn.org and click on State Affiliates.
Martha, Thankyou. I found some very helpful information at that website. Joa

I know that in the area that I live in, in Virginia,a school nurse does not need a BSN to practice. As long as you are liscenced as an RN yoiu can be a school nurse.
