Slowly starting pre-req's-Dont make my mistakes!

Published

I have made so many mistakes with my education.

First off I did not know that I should have been taking diffrent classes in High School. I took all the 'Easy' core courses. I should have known I was doing the wrong thing when everything was way to simple!

My last year of High school I started to fix what I had done wrong. I took 11th and 12th grade biology and was starting all the way back at grade 10 math.

Every thing was going fine untill... I decided to get mixed up with the wrong group of friends. I hardly went to school. I just wanted to party and hang out with guys older then myself.

So here I found myself pregnant durring graduation. Being a mother has actually worked out well for me. I know have 2 children and a loving husband.

Although I find that I feel realy bad about failing some of my courses and not finishing others because of my old ways. So here I am going back to school to do up all my pre-reqs Its going to take me the better part of 2 years.

I have to go back to finish my 12th grade Biology. I need to take 11th and 12th grade Chemistry

I took a placement test and they are going to place me right in the 'Higher level' of 12th grade English and Social studies.

....But I did SO horrible on the math section that they recomend that I take a grade 10 math prep, then math 10 pure, then 11th grade pure math AND THEN 12th grade pure math... thats going to BITE!

Thats 9 courses at like $600 a course!!!!! Don't mess up while your in school kids!!! IT WILL COST YOU!!!

Anyway Im going on Monday to get set up with the Biology. Then 2 weeks later I'll get set up with the math prep. I'm only going to tackle 2 courses at a time for now. I want to stretch out the process so that when I apply to Nursing School My son will also be in school full time.

I am proud of you! Life is never easy and WE ALL make mistakes. You will make a HUGE impact on this world. Life is full of valleys and mountain tops...you will look back on this time when you are standing on top of your mountain and be grateful for the lessons that you learned while in the valley!

I started back to school after 4 kids and no college at all. It had been so long since High school I couldnt even remember how to do fractions. I had not taken a biology class since I was a sophmore in high school, had no chem, etc you get the picture.

Well, fast forward 3 years later, after backtracking and catching up on what should have been high school credits (Algebra and Chemistry) and college pre-reqs, I begin the LPN program at my school next week.

Good luck and be proud of yourself for taking the first step by taking your placement tests. I know its scary. I got a 4.0 taking 2 classes at a time, I know you can do it too!

Thank you for sharing. I wish high school students could read this.

I'm feeling more ready then ever to tackle what needs to be done.

I too wish that more high schoolers would read your post. It's also good to know that you can start up your education again after you've had a chance to settle down a little. Yes, the cost associated with needing to take 3 or 4 math classes instead of 0 or 1 can be big but it can all be accomplished.

I always tell high school kids that high school is only hard because YOU make it that way.

Looking back, high school SHOULD have been a cake walk, but like you I was more concerned with boys and, well, not going to school. lol

I dropped out of high school my junior year and had my son at 17. I enrolled in my local college a year and a half later and let me tell you, the first day was more frightening than going into labor! lol I also had to take remedial math courses before taking on college level math, but it was best that way. I definitely needed that refreshing!

Here I am now, just finished my first degree in liberal arts (magna cum laude honors) and am slated to start the nursing program next month! I know it's difficult not too look back and point out what you should have and shouldn't have done, but just as long as you're taking the initiative to fix things NOW. That's all that matters, imo.

You'll do great. I know it.
