any skills in med surg 5that i am missing?

Published

Hello. i am a private duty and ltc nurse with starting adult med surg in jan.I have never worked med surg, much less a hospital. All my 5 years were in ltc, private duty, and school nursing. I have a list of skills i am proficent at and am wondering if there are new skills i need to learn besides the ones i already know: Ventilators of all types, trachs of all types{including changing them out} piccs, ivs, foleys, bile drainage bags, colostomies, g tubes, ng tubes, blood draws, wound care{but not the wound vac} glucometers, and of course injections of all types. I am kinda scared because everyone i know is saying i'll probably comfortable with the skill part but have time management issues.

You'll learn it, don't worry. If you have a basic skill set, and experience to make the rational judgments, everything else will come. Ask your coworkers and NM to make helpful suggestions if you feel like you have a problem after orientation. Good luck to you!

are you kidding? We would LOVE to have you as a new-to-our-facility nurse. You are ahead of the new grads in knowing how to do those tasks. Now you will begin to concentrate on hospital policies and time management. You could even serve as a resource person on your unit for some skills you can share. They would appreciate having you to go to.
