Skilled Nursing Facility to Hospital

Published

Hi! I just got my Registered Nurse License. I would like to know if I start to work in skilled nursing facility to build a working experience wouldn't be hard for me to get hired if i decide to apply in a hospital in the future?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I am sorry I don't have an answer for you but I was hoping someone answered your question, because I am curious about the exact same thing. I am a new grad looking to work in a skilled nursing facility, but don't know if that would hurt my rsume/ work history. Did you ever find an answer?

Right now, it is almost impossible to get hired at a hospital as a new grad. As well as the fact the new grad programs are not going to start again until the summer, if they are not cancelled as quite a few were just this month.

If you do a year or two of LTC, not a problem with going back to acute care in normal situation. But not sure when things are going to pick up again or be back to "normal."

There is no guarantee to anything right now.

It depends on what position you are applying! Rehab and Med/Surg, you will have a better chance!

Two of my co-workers working in the nursing homes found work in some big shot names hospitals in New York. Also, it depends on the economy as well, when the nursing shortage is severe, then they are not picky. They will take you even you only have long term care experience. The nurse recruiter will also look at whether you will be able to keep the job in the same place for a least one year. If your experience is one month here in the nursing home, and 7 months in other nursing home; believe me, the nurse recruiter will not call you at all. It reflects a lot about you as a nurse.
