Situation, pay and insurance

Published

Here's the situation, Im a vet so I wouldn't need insurance from wherever I get a job. As a future new grad starting out could I get paid more not getting benefits?

In my experince, yes. Also usually paid more if contract or PRN.

What would I be considered? I would full time but not drawing benefits. How much more an hr would I make?

Also, would that make it easier to get a job if they knew I didn't need anything like health insurance etc?

If you're contract or PRN, then yes. The rate is often higher when benefits are not offered. However, if you're talking about something like a full time hospital position, then no. You can choose to opt out of things like health insurance, but you do not get paid more (there are a lot of people who choose to opt out of things like health insurance because they are covered by a better policy through a spouse or something similar).

In my previous (not nursing) job group coverage was provided to an individual employee at no cost. The company claimed this benefit was worth around $13000 a year. Any employee who opted out of coverage received $1000 spread out over the course of the year. Do the math.

Ok, in my experience (my prior job) I was full-time without benefits. I made about $9 more per hour than if I would have taken the benefits. It may depend on the facility, I would ask HR.

The float pool doesn't get benefits and they almost make double the amount I make.

Every place is different. Sometimes you will be paid more, sometimes not, even for PRN or float pool, and if you do get paid more the amount will vary with the facility. You just have to ask HR at the places where you want to work.

There is no difference in hourly pay whether or not you accept benefits where i work. But considering i pay $100+ every 2 weeks for dental and health insurance, you would be able to add that $$ to your pay check if you didnt accept insurance. Ive never heard of not accepting insurance as a reason for being hired.

Also, our float pool has benefits AND a higher hourly rate.

One place that I work at I make 6 dollars an hour more for not having benefits (no sick time, no vacation, no insurance, no holiday pay) and the other place I work at I make 1 dollar an hour extra.

Also, our float pool has benefits AND a higher hourly rate.

Our FT float pool has full benefits, but our PRN float pool has none. Neither gets a higher hourly rate.
