Poorest lack of judgment EVER!!!

*Admins please do not post on Facebook*

My hours are 8 am - 3:30 pm. Every single day. I have made it clear many times that anything that occurs before 8:00 am needs to be dealt with by admin or call the parents directly, etc. Any emergency they call 911.

As I am backing out of my driveway at 7:12 am this morning to drive my kids to school, I get a text on my personal phone from one of our teachers that "A student was hit by a car this morning and is waiting for me to check her in my office"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I proceeded to text back "Absolutely NOT OK. Call 911 NOW, Call Police to file report and call family. In that order. I am driving my kids to school and cannot be involved in a back and forth about this". A few minutes goes by. Another text. "Grandma is with her. I don't think the car was driving very fast when it hit her". :banghead: I again sent the above text and then reminded her that I am not on duty yet, have NO WAY to evaluate the status of the student and they need to call 911. If grandmother refusing that, to have her take the kid to to ER. I also reminded her that I was driving, in my car (I was not texting and driving don't worry) and could not have this conversation and they needed to deal with it. She proceeded to text me a play by play for the next 20 minutes. I did not respond.

I am currently sitting in my office, door closed, trying to decompress so I do not attack anyone. The teacher who texted me is outside my door teaching a class and I am counting slowly to 100 before I go about my day.

Am I being unreasonable here to think that this was completely out of line and a complete lack of judgment? Who cares if the "car was barely moving when it hit her"?! No one saw the incident occur so no one can determine how fast the car was going, if she fell and bumped head, etc. No one. What did she think I was going to do over the phone? This also occurred in our crosswalk, with one of our teachers acting as the crossing guard, so I am assuming there is liability, etc. I am having a meeting with my OPs director ASAP (she is not in the building which is probably why this happened in the first place).

Vent over. Thanks for listening. Kid is fine by the way, in ER now to be safe and just shaken up more than anything.

Ugh. I'm glad it turned out things were handled, despite the teacher adding drama! This stuff legit happens though and it's REALLY dumb and dangerous. I was once in an after school nurses meeting at the admin building and our Pre-K school nurse got a phone call from some staff at her school, "OMG! A kid with a peanut allergy got a hold of some peanuts and ate them! You got to get back over here!!!!!" She told them to call 911, hung up the phone and headed over there. But good lord! We were all astounded and she was pissed. I get it's unfamiliar territory for many teachers, but that's why there are policies and education that takes place every year for this kind of stuff. Plus, you know, common sense.

Gah! Hopefully one of those fully functioning adults managed to call 911 and give epi if it was warranted!

Here is my thought!! Most of these people have kids of their own. Can they not put themselves into the place of "what if this was my kid, what would I want somebody else to do for them"?????????????????????????????????

I'm just sitting here shaking my head. I don't understand why people don't use common sense. They want to shift responsibility SO FAST and accommodate everyone so that instant gratification is received by all parties, even if it is actually delaying the safest course of action.

This is precisely it. The teacher could not dump responsibility for the situation fast enough. She was hoping that as soon as she texted you, you would assume responsibility for the situation and she could just walk away from it.

Sweet Baby Jesus.

I agree. I have been astounded over the years what teachers will send to the clinic with no note, no phone call, no escort. Possible concussions, really low blood sugars, asthma symptoms, etc. It as if just getting them out of their room is they feel is the end of their responsibility to the student. What happens if the kid never makes it to the clinic????? Once again, if only people would stop and think 'what would I want someone to do if this was my child?" I use this as guide for my practice daily.

What in the everlasting hell is wrong with that teacher?

My GOD!

I'm a lowly sub (not CSN), and I'm still astounded at how many people think the nurse in the health room is an all-knowing, multidisciplinary emergency room trauma doc with x ray eyes and prescribing privileges for everything!!!

Flattered, but astounded.

Most non-medical people freeze. My son related a story of how a teacher friend of ours had a son split his head open. She hugged him as blood poured out his head. My older son asked her if she should probably put something there to help stop the bleeding. My younger son's take away from this is my wife and I are too clinical when an injury occurs, he liked the hugging. I believe most parents respond like this friend.

This is true and it's very chicken and egg... which came first? Do those in the medical field become able to clinically separate their emotions during an emergency or did they go into the medical field because they had this ability?

Similar to other societal trends we see. Is there a problem with police brutality because the authority of being an officer went to their heads or was a violent person drawn to a profession that would put them in a position of authority? Do so many politicians become seemingly amoral because of greed or are greedy people attracted to a position where they can use their power to help themselves?

Before becoming a nurse, I was a hairdresser and several people I worked with had also made a change from hair dresser or nail tech to nursing. I was asked about it by some of my clients and I surmised that the two professions attracted the same kind of personality- someone who wants to work with and help people and make them feel good.

It kinda of reminds me of my camp job. One of the nurses daughter got hurt and needed stitches. She was in hysterics when it happened, but when it happens on someone else's kid, she's calm as a cucumber.

While for me, my child broke his foot one day in the playground, and while he was hurt badly, I tried to keep myself calm and him calm, and took care of the situation like I would for my student here at work. I was worried, yes, and I wanted to cry, but something in me told me to be calm or he will freak out and be worse.

It depends on the person I guess.
