another hearing screen story to share

Specialties School

Published

So I had a middle schooler fail all of my hearing screens, was referred for professional evaluation and failed that as well, so was being referred to a specialist a few hours away.

Mother voiced her concerns with me about student's hearing ability, so I agreed to retest and yes.....he passed within seconds. Luckily, she won't have the extra medical bills and travel expenses for the pediatric specialist. I assume they had a nice chat before I tested him.

This. So true. I am so glad you had a conversation with mom and you were able to save them the trip. Good work!

On that note, I honestly, do not like anything about hearing screening at school. Because, in my world(s) at my schools. There is NO way to find a quiet place to administer the screening. Therefore, I always question the accuracy. Of course, I don't have an expensive audiometer. In my early years of nursing I had an expensive one that was pretty much "fool proof".

I had a student earlier this year who I screened. I knew she could hear the tones, but she wanted to be a stinker and claimed that she couldn't. A quick call to dad and a re-screen the next day, low and behold, she passed with flying colors.

When I suspect a kid is pretending not to hear, I present all kinds of random tones between 25 and 65dB. I hit all the ones they need to pass on several times until they respond to each one that they need to. When they're done, they'll usually ask "How'd I do?" with a poop-eating grin on their face. Always so surprised when I tell them they heard all the tones I needed them to.

PreK are the ones I do most of the time and it can be a challenge in patience.
