Reconstituting IM Geodon with 0.9% NaCl

Hello,

I am a psychiatric nurse and frequently administer IM Geodon. I know that IM Geodon should only be reconstituted with 1.2ml of sterile water, but I sometimes notice my colleagues (accidentally) reconstituting with 0.9% Sodium Chloride. This is partially due to a storage/labeling flaw on our unit. My question is, what is the true risk of reconstituting IM Geodon with NaCl? I can't find any research on particulate formation, adverse effects for the patient, etc. Any ideas?

I researched on drugs.com

It indicates only reconstitute with sterile water.....

NS?, maybe NS would affect osmolarity?, & prevent 100% reconstitution?

You must not substitute NS FOR SW if the drug manufacturer states to only use SW.If one ignores the drug manufacturers instructions and uses any old diluent this can cause poor dissolution of the powder, precipitation and worse yet the active pharmaceutical agent can be deactivated. What then is the point of administering it if the desired effects is negated. If a nurse does not have have the correct diluent then call and get a substitute.
