UTA AO Questions & Concerns

Nursing Students Texas (UTA)

Published

Hi All,

I apologize if this is pretty lengthy, I just really needing some advice right now!!! Just some back info for you guys, I graduated from Texas Tech in December of 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations. I'm a first year generation student, and was raised by a single mom so I had some obstacles against me. I experienced lots of things that my family was unable to help me with. Saying all this to say, academically I had a rough start at Tech, I struggled with living so far from home, I'm from the Houston area. I was really struggling on what to major in, I couldn't find my niche! My mom and aunt wanted me to become a nurse/teacher and I thought "that's too hard I could never do that" and "they just want me to be a nurse because that was their dream and passion". I couldn't find my passion and was extremely homesick and went through a year of depression. I eventually lost my financial aid and was suspended from school.

However, my mom was not having that and told me to get it together. I worked hard got back into Tech and made the Dean's list twice and had 3 internships! It was tough, at one point I was working 4 part time jobs (couldn't find a full time job) to make ends meet and going to school full time. After graduating I was unable to find work in my field until November of 2017 as a admin at a telecommunications firm.

I reconnected to the idea of becoming a nurse after seeing a number of my family members being cared for by some truly amazing nurses. Literally since the end of my junior year at Tech I've been interested in becoming a nurse. I wanted to complete my degree in PR since I came so far but I definitely wanted to pursue nursing. As of today, I've been accepted into UTA's College of Nursing. I've taken most of my nursing pre-reqs, which I'm paying for out of pocket. I'm currently enrolled in A&P 2 and Micro. I still have to take Chem, Pharmacology, Pathophysiologic Processes in Nursing Practice and Intro to Professional & Clinical Concepts in Nursing. Then of course I have to take the TEAs and apply to the AO program. I'm aiming to get accepted into the accelerated online program but I have GREAT FEARS!!!!

I have a pretty good support system, my best friend is about to finish nursing school so she's a ton of help and my mom and I are taking our pre-reqs together she'll soon be applying for her nursing program as well, she's going for her associates. After all that I've been through in my undergrad, I'm concerned about the accelerated program. I'm 25 so this 15 month program is so perfect because I want to start my career asap. I just think I may be getting in over my head because I'll have to work my full time job in order to pay for a portion of the program or at least the books. I just don't want to get a ton of loans but it's currently looking that way. Do yall have any advice? Is it possible to work full time and do the AO program? What would you suggest? Thanks in advance!

From what I've seen some people say it is. I'm also working towards my pre reqs as well. I intend on hopefully getting into the online program as well. I need to keep working full time. I have a family to support. So I get it. It will be tough no doubt. But it looks like you got a pretty good support system. I think you can do it.

I think I'm just cautious bc of my undergraduate experience. I think I just need to let go of those insecurities, prioritize, buckle down and get it done. Thank you so much for the advice. I hope all goes well for you and I hope you get into the program.

Hello, I have a few questions as well that would love for a current student to answer.

I am interested in the program, however I have noticed a few red flags. I called to get information about a month ago. Since then, I have received 16 phone calls from advisers.

I am just curious, if this is such a competitive program, why are they so interested in my application? I haven't even sent transcripts in yet.

Is it really that competitive?

I have been rejected five times to two other accelerated BSN programs. I am desperate, but skeptical. Do they just want me to become a student, take their "nursing pre-reqs" (I already have all other pre-reqs) just for the money? What if I do that and then they deny my application?

Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Thank you!

I personally think it's just as competitive as any other AO program just maybe a bit more because UTA happens to be the most reasonably cost efficient one. Plus, they have one of the highest percentages of their students passing the NCLEX post graduation. As far as the numerous calls I'm thinking thats exactly what they want is for you to take your prereqs there. I've literally taken about 70% of my prereqs and they just asked me today if I'd be open to taking the remainder there at UTA. I told them no I'm fine at Lone Star College bc it's financially efficient for me and I'm able to save money for the program. You just have to be firm and let them know where you stand. I also have emailed the nursing advisor to complete the 3 pre-nursing courses at Lone Star College. So don't let them tell you that you have to take it at UTA bc you don't.

I also think the numerous phone calls depend on what information or questions you asked. When I called Last summer they were supposed to contact me a number of times and never did. I ultimately had to reach out to them. Same thing with my best friend, she applied to the program a year ago and they just called her back a month ago letting her know she'd been accepted. She's almost done with the program that she's in at Ft. Worth lol.

As far as being denied, you won't know until you try, right? I thought the same thing "oh my GPA isn't great from my last degree" but the GPA for my prereqs are pretty good. Talk to an enrollment specialist again, if they tell you they aren't sure then just go ahead and send your transcripts then apply to UTA. I applied Dec 6th and Got accepted on Dec 10th. After I take my TEAS and finish my prereqs then I can apply to the AO program; it's a 2-step process. In my opinion they count on many prospective students not completing the paperwork and application because it's a lot of steps. Just take a Saturday and make a list of everything and get it done. I hope this helps you somewhat!
