Should my new license only last for 5 months?

Published

Hi everyone,

I'm from Massachusetts and I recently passed my NCLEX after a long road of trying to figure out what the Credential Services was missing (they had my COG, but never inputted it). After taking the test, I waited 8 weeks before figuring there was another issue (websites said 6 weeks, but I waited longer incase delays were due to COVID). There was apparently an issue with the way my school reported my preceptorship as a clinical instead, but they said it would be resolved within the day and I would have my license. Now I have my license, but it is only valid for 5 months. I thought licenses were supposed to be good for 2 years? I'm not sure I could even get the required hours and CEUs to requalify within the time left.

I have two questions,

1)Is it normal for my license to only be valid for 5 months (I did graduate in 2020, but due to personal reasons as well as PCS's mistake, I wasn't able to take the NCLEX until Nov. 2021)?

2)If it's not normal, should I contact the state or the Credential Services? I've sent emails to the state, as they are still out of the office due to COVID-19 according to their phone, and the have not responded to them. The Credential Services said I should contact the state about licenses.

I honestly just want to get to work, and these extra hoops to jump through are incredibly frustrating. Thanks guys, and sorry if this is in the wrong area

Your state probably has license renewal on the even years. Even though you got your initial license in 2022, it will still need to be renewed in 2022.

Yes, this happened to me in WV years ago.  @Ryan Sherman, you should review the Massachusetts' BON website to determine what, if any, your CEU requirement will be for this renewal period>

Thank you both for the information, this explains things a lot better than the information I got from the actual state emailing me! It just felt like I was going nuts after every other frustration. Thanks
