Should I take Chem before taking Microbiology?

Published

I'm due to take Micro next semester, but am extremely nervous b/c I have not taken Chem yet. What do you think?

At my present school, chem is required before micro. My physiology teacher said that he is attempting to get the school to make chem a prereq to physio also, which makes sense. I would recommend chem before micro. It will help. You can get by without it, but you may have to work harder to understand some of the chem topics.

I agree with Caliotter. It's to your advantage to take chem before physio. I took it before and found that i was much more comfortable with some of the material and also with the lab. If you haven't taken chem in the past, don't try to take them both, the work load will probably be overwhelming. Good luck to you.

I took Micro after Chem. It does help now that I think about it :)

I would recommend asking around within your program and get feedback from people who have taken Micro... I think it varies where you take it and your overall background in bio classes.

I took Micro before General Chem 1 and 2. I did fine, got an A. I guess it just depends on the curriculum. I did horribly at Chem, lol. I loved Micro, the study of all the bacterium, growing them, etc. So, it was interesting to me so I excelled.

I guess it just depends...

I have not taken micro yet, but I took A&P before i took chemistry and did just fine. I had no knowledge about chemistry whatsoever, and i did just fine. Having a very general knowledge of chemistry probably would have helped but very very little of what you learn in Gen Chem is going to help you out in Micro or A&P. I would go for it!

Exactly. I do not recall needing to "know" much Chem for Micro. It was in-depth for sure, but in a different way and I loved it. Probably one of my favorite courses. I guess it depends on the school and how it is taught.

I just happened to take Chemistry before I took Micro, but I don't recall it helping much. Other than some lab procedures, I don't think I used anything from Chemistry...they are two different subjects. General Bio would be more important than taking Chemistry, in my opinion, but again, unnecessary unless required by the school. Don't worry, Micro is amazing!

If your class doesn't require it, it should be fine without it. I took Micro before chem, and got an A. My physio class requires chem before. You'll be fine!

I haven't taken chem yet, but in my micro class there was a chem portion which I thought was odd. If I wanted to learn chem then I would've taken chem. I got an A in the class, so whether or not you take chem b/4 really doesn't make a difference. Bottom line, you just have to study and you'll do just fine.

DEFINITELY. u should take chem before micro.

some topics in micro has a lot to do with chemistry. u dont want to look lost in class when those chemistry topics are being discussed.

I took Anatomy, Physiology, Micro and Chem in that order and did just fine. The Micro was so interesting that the chemistry aspect of it didn't factor in much for me. I was happy to have learned the chemistry in micro before I took the actual chemistry class, as that allowed me to study the parts of chemistry that I didn't know so well.

Did any of that make sense? LOL
