Should I study LPN or RN?

Published

Hello everybody!

I need your advices. I took the ATI Teas yesterday and got 80%. My previous goal is LPN (minimum score is 60% for LPN, so I did well). After got my score, the counselor said that I should apply Polk College for RN (because the score for RN at Polk College is 70%).

But I need take the entrance exam for Polk College (PERT exam include Reading, Math, Writing). I am scared Writing, I don't know whether I pass Writing or not because I am foreigner, and my Listening skill and Speaking skill are not good (I am just good at Reading, Grammar ), and I have two children to take care.

Does anyone give me advice? Should I apply for RN? Will my Listening skill and Speaking skill be problem in College? My friend said they are improved so I shouldn't so worried, and she said that It was a waste if I didn't go to College with my 80% ATI Teas score.

Or Should I study LPN, and transfer to RN after that?

I am so confused, I need your advices. Please help meee !

If the LPN program does not require PERT, I would do LPN and here's why: You will get additional experience with the language while in school. That experience will be in the world of healthcare, and will only improve your language skills. In the meantime, you will earn your LPN, be able to get a decent job to support yourself, and THEN move into an RN program- with healthcare experience AND improved language skills!

KUDOS to all of you English second language folks out there- you have my utmost respect. I cannot imagine how much time you have put into learning English!

Maybe you're right, I need to improve my listening and reading in LPN program before going to college. I have never gone to ESL classes, I don't have chances to practice English with people. Because I have to take care my children, I just studied at home.

Thank you very much, I appreciate your advice.

Hello,

I think you should also start with the LPN program. Just like the previous comment it will help you in the longrun. It will help with practice in writing in English and with communication. Communicating is very important in Nursing because you will be "teaching" your patients. Good Luck in in your endeavors, You will succeed in whatever program you chose to attend!
