I've completed 3 weeks orientation on my new job in acute medical re-hab. All is going well so far. I'm on a very supportive floor with a great preceptor. I work days and they have on-sight childcare, which is terrific.
Now for the bad news. I was called for an interview today for my dream job in OB. The base pay for this position will probably be less, but it's nights so that might make up for the pay difference...but it's NIGHTS!! UGH!! I'll have to find new childcare and this floor might not be as supportive to new grads. I guess it's all circumspect right now as I've not been given an offer, but the number 1 reason I went to nursing school was to serve in women's health.
I'm just really torn by the possibility of this decision.

Childcare in the evening could become an issue. Unless you have someone willing to keep your child/children for free, I would stay. Get a few years experience, then look for the dream job. You may actually end up with something better you've ever seen coming...
Well my younger children will stay at home with my oldest daughter, who's 16, and my fiance. So, I really just need daycare in the days to sleep.

Well, you haven't been given an offer yet, so I would wait for that, or, as stated before, stick with what you have now and look for new horizons in the future. On site childcare is nothing to pass by. Good luck with your decision.

Okay that is a tough one. But I think I would say to stick it out with the job you have. You were blessed to be working with encouraging nurses, at site day-care, a routine that works for you and your children. Get your experience and then you can transfer to another unit may-be even within the hospital you are at and once you are known it will be easier to be a first pick for days.
That being said - if you think you will truly hate the area you are in and the only area that is going to bring you happiness is OB then you may need to make the change. Just remember you don't have to worry about your daycare provider canceling at the last minute and your kids are near you. That is a big load off to me.

Well, it can't hurt to investigate this other opportunity a bit more. I'd go for the interview, tour the unit, ask lots of questions and then decide. Until you're actually offered the job, you don't need to make any decisions. I am just a firm believer in doing what you love...so if your interview goes great and you get a really good vibe from the people you meet then I say go for it. As for nights, I have a toddler and teenagers and nights were much better for me and them. I found I had much more time with them...yeah, I only got about 6 hours sleep the days after working but I did just fine on that. I think you'll always wonder "what if" if you don't look into it.
I received an e-mail today from nurse recruiter saying she spoke with the NM and to give her a call at my earliest convenience tomorrow. I hope this is an encouraging sign.
I too have toddlers and teenagers, and I found a daycare provider should I be given the offer. I'd still like to shadow on the floor before making a final decision, but I had a peer interview as well as the one with the NM and I felt comfortable with the staff I met. I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but I'm on pins and needles with anticipation.
