Should I speak of another offer during an interview???

Published

So I have received an offer from a prestigious hospital in S. California. Recently I have been called to come in and interview for another prestigious hospital in N. California, where I am currently living and hope to stay...

My question is this- should I bring up offer #1 during the interview??? Would it help me or go against me?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!!!

Can't see how it would help.

No, cause I can promise you that they really don't care! I am sure that they have plenty more in line for that same position.

No, keep your cards close to your vest. Use that to your advantage, not theirs.

I would think it would most likely cause them to write you off their list without a second thought. I would keep the information to myself. Take action about any job offers after the dust has settled.

Nope. Do not bring it up.

Bad idea to bring it up - voice of experience on this one. I've blown several interviews by doing this; far, far better to keep offer #1 in your hip pocket just in case #2 won't play.

Don't bring it up. The only time I do bring that up is if I am waiting a long time (not one week) for them to get back to me. Then i call HR (not the unit) and tell them. "I really hate to bother you...I have another offer pending and they are asking for an answer. I would much prefer to work at your hospital, so I am hoping to find out what my status is. This allows you to keep the offer as an ace in the hole, without offending anyone.

I wouldn't, I kind of like to get the feel that the institution I'm applying for currently is the ONLY one I want, so I wouldn't bring up another offer personally. I'm applying for a few places at the moment, and at the last place of interview I was asked why I hadn't applied for a Midwifery position anywhere???? I answered with having more of a pull towards medical nursing, however, I did wonder how they knew I hadn't applied for a Midwifery position or were they just trying to find out where my passion was?

i wouldn't do it. they may write you off. then if the interview with the other hospital doesn't work out, you're stuck with nothing.

To the OP....NO! Don't mention a single peep as others have commented on. I know of several friends who did and never got the second offer or interview. It's kind of showboating to the interviewer, not a cool idea.

Go to the second interview and hope for the best they pick up and you can drop the first offer. If it means you need to pack your bags, bring the hubby and or the kids, do it. In this tight economy, you have to do what you have to do for 1-2 years.

You can't pass up the opportunity, that's for sure! It's a sacrifice!

Don't stall the first offer time either, if there's a certain deadline to submit your offer and it exceeds the timing of the 2nd interview/offer, they could change their minds, not so good for you. I know it happened to a friend who wanted to stay in the Bay Area and wished she didn't apply into So CAl, in the end, she had to take the offer in the LA area, but misses her husband daily, but like I said, it's worth the sacrifices. It's a good thing they didn't have kids, but they have a lot of Southwest and Virgin Airlines mileage!

Good luck in the first job offer and the second interview coming up.
